Why it’s here

A monster discovers that the child he was taught to fear is someone to protect, and a whole city learns that laughter is stronger than fear. Friendship and a fatherly protectiveness drive the story.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

The villain straps Boo into a scream-extracting machine, and some monsters are briefly scary for little ones. The scare-for-profit scheme is exposed and replaced with laughter; nothing else of note.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why were the monsters so afraid of children?
  2. When did Sulley start to care about Boo?
  3. Was Mike a good friend? Was Sulley?
  4. Who was the real villain, and how could you tell?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 5+: comic peril; one intense scene with a toddler strapped to a machine; mild flirting.
