White Christmas1954White Christmas
1954
Two Army buddies turned Broadway stars follow a pair of singing sisters to a Vermont inn, only to find it run by their old commanding general and close to failing. They decide to put on a show and bring his division home for Christmas.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
Two veterans spend their talents honoring the general they served under, and an entire division turns out for him. Loyalty, gratitude for soldiers, and Irving Berlin's songs at their finest.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
The opening takes place near a WWII battlefield with shelling, and there's nightclub drinking. A romantic misunderstanding comes from eavesdropping and jumping to conclusions and is cleared up, and the "Minstrel Show" number (without blackface) reflects its era and may need a word of explanation.

Discussion questions
When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.
- Why did Bob and Phil go to so much trouble for General Waverly?
- How did you feel when the soldiers walked in on Christmas Eve?
- Which song was your favorite, and why?
- Was the misunderstanding between Bob and Betty anyone's fault?
Content advisory
Common Sense Media 7+: brief WWII shelling; nightclub cocktails and a pipe; romance with kissing; no profanity.
