Why it’s here

Atticus Finch is a widowed father raising his children in conscience and courtesy, and he defends an innocent man knowing he'll lose. A cornerstone of moral imagination.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

A Black man is falsely accused of rape and convicted, and the n-word is used; the racism is shown as evil (Atticus rebukes it), so parents should be ready to explain the accusation and the era. Bob Ewell attacks the children at night and is killed, and Scout's schoolyard fights are corrected by her father.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Atticus defend Tom Robinson?
  2. What did Atticus mean about climbing into someone's skin?
  3. Who was Boo Radley, really?
  4. What was the bravest thing in the story?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 12+: a false rape accusation and trial; the n-word, rebuked by Atticus; children attacked at night and Jem's arm broken; a man killed; a drunken villain.
