The Ugly Dachshund

1966

A young married couple's quiet home is turned upside down when the wife's prize dachshunds are joined by a clumsy Great Dane puppy who thinks he's one of them. As Brutus grows, so does the chaos, and so do the husband-and-wife squabbles over whose dog is to blame.

Why it’s here

A gentle comedy of a young married couple and their dogs. Marriage is shown with affection and humor, with quarrels that end in quick apologies.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Champagne drinking, and a husband tells his wife to "shut up" during a spat; he apologizes and the film treats it as wrong. Nothing else of note.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Brutus think he was a dachshund?
  2. What did Mark and Fran argue about, and how did they make up?
  3. Which dog was your favorite?
  4. What was the funniest scene?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 7+: champagne drinking and teasing about being drunk; a marital spat with "shut up"; no violence.
