Maria is a high-spirited postulant who doesn't quite fit at the abbey, so she's sent to be governess to the seven children of a stern, widowed naval captain. She fills the silent house with music, and the family must decide what it will stand for when Nazi Germany swallows Austria.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A young woman brings music back to a grieving widower's home, and a family that refuses to bow to the Nazis escapes over the mountains. Faith, marriage, and some of the most beautiful music on film.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Nazi soldiers confront the family, and Rolf's betrayal and the escape through the abbey are tense for little ones. The children's early pranks on Maria are shown as wrong and they're sorry, and the baroness smokes.

- Why had the Captain stopped singing?
- What did the Reverend Mother tell Maria about climbing every mountain?
- Why wouldn't the Captain fly the Nazi flag?
- Which song do you most want to sing again?
