Why it’s here

One of the most beautiful family films ever made: a boy's patient bond with a wild horse, nearly wordless on the island.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

The shipwreck is intense (a ship burns, a man cuts off Alec's life jacket, his father is lost) and there's a cobra on the island, so preview for little ones. Smoking and drinking are period-typical.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. How did Alec earn the Black's trust?
  2. What did Alec's father give him before the shipwreck?
  3. How did Henry help Alec?
  4. Which scene was the most beautiful?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 8+: an intense shipwreck with fire and panic (a man cuts off a boy's life jacket); a boy's father lost at sea; smoking and drinking.
