The Absent-Minded Professor

1961

Professor Ned Brainard is so absent-minded he's missed his own wedding twice. Then one night his experiments produce flubber, a bouncing substance that can make a basketball team soar and a Model T fly, and a crooked businessman decides he wants it for himself.

Why it’s here

A cheerful, inventive comedy with a flying Model T and a basketball game on flubber, about an absent-minded man who must learn to keep his promises to the woman he loves.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Pratfalls and car crashes, and a villain fires a gun during a chase; nothing else of note.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Professor Brainard keep missing his wedding?
  2. What was the funniest thing flubber did?
  3. Was Alonzo Hawk a real villain, or just a greedy man?
  4. What would you invent if you could?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 6+: pratfalls and two car crashes with no injuries; gunshots in a chase; a sobriety-test gag.
