Why it’s here

An orphaned boy raised by a loving gorilla mother earns his place in his family and protects them from a greedy hunter. Kala is one of Disney's great mothers.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

At the start, a leopard kills Tarzan's human parents and a baby gorilla (off-screen), and the leopard fight, gunfire, and the villain's death by hanging in the vines (in silhouette) are intense for little ones.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. How did Kala show she loved Tarzan?
  2. Why didn't Kerchak accept Tarzan? Did that change?
  3. Was Clayton the villain? What did he want?
  4. Why did Tarzan stay in the jungle?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 6+: a leopard kills Tarzan's parents and a baby gorilla off-screen; fierce fights; a villain's death by hanging in silhouette; a kiss.
