Rapunzel has spent eighteen years in a hidden tower, kept by the woman she believes is her mother and longing to see the floating lights that appear on her birthday. When a charming thief climbs through her window, she strikes a bargain that takes her into the world for the first time.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A thief learns to lay down his life, and a daughter is restored to the parents who never stopped hoping. It exposes a manipulative false "mother" against the true love of a family.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Mother Gothel's manipulation is unsettling, Flynn is stabbed (bloodless), and Gothel falls to her death, all intense for little ones. Rapunzel defies Gothel and runs off with a thief, which the film frames sympathetically because Gothel is a kidnapper, so it's worth explaining how that differs from a real parent.

- Was Mother Gothel a good mother? How could you tell?
- Was Rapunzel right to leave the tower?
- What changed Flynn from a thief into a hero?
- What did the lanterns mean to Rapunzel's parents?
Content advisory
Common Sense Media 5+: chases, swordplay, a bloodless stabbing, and a villain's fall; mild language; flirting and a kiss.
