1977
On a desert planet, farm boy Luke Skywalker stumbles onto a desperate message from a captured princess. With an old Jedi knight, two droids, and a cocky smuggler and his co-pilot, he's swept into a rebellion against the Galactic Empire and its armored enforcer, Darth Vader.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A farm boy, a princess, and a selfish smuggler who turns hero. It's a clear story of good against evil, with John Williams's grand score and a mentor who gives his life.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Constant laser battles, plus intense moments for little ones: Luke finds his aunt and uncle's charred bodies (briefly), an arm is severed in the cantina, and a planet is destroyed. Han's mercenary attitude turns to loyalty, which is worth pointing out.

Discussion questions
When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.
- Why did Han come back at the end?
- What did Obi-Wan sacrifice, and why?
- Who was the hero and who was the villain?
- Was the music beautiful, or just loud?
Content advisory
Common Sense Media 8+: frequent sci-fi blaster and lightsaber violence; two "damns" and two "hells"; cantina drinking.
