Why it’s here

Sweeping hand-drawn landscapes and a wild stallion's unbreakable spirit, with real friendship and loyalty between a horse and a young Lakota man.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

The U.S. Cavalry is portrayed one-sidedly as the villain, mistreating horses and attacking a Lakota village, so it's worth a conversation about the real history. A horse is shot and badly hurt, and peril on a runaway train and at a cliff is intense for little ones.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. What did Spirit want most?
  2. Why did Little Creek let Spirit go?
  3. Was the Colonel a villain? Why did he let them go in the end?
  4. Which landscape was the most beautiful?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 7+: horses in frequent peril; a horse is shot; a cavalry attack on a village; a drunk cavalryman and a cigar.
