Why it’s here

A rough backwoodsman learns what it means to be a husband and father, and a young wife brings order and gentleness to six unruly brothers. Exuberant dancing and a joyful picture of courtship and marriage.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

The brothers carry off the town girls in a comic retelling of the Sabine women, but the film treats it as wrong: Milly is furious and Adam has to repent, so it's worth talking about. There's also a barn-raising brawl.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. What did Adam have to learn about being a husband?
  2. Was it right for the brothers to carry off the girls? What did Milly think?
  3. What changed Adam's heart?
  4. Which dance was the most exciting?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 6+: a barn-raising fistfight; nothing else significant flagged.
