1953
Princess Ann, weary of her royal duties during a state visit to Rome, slips out of her embassy for a day of freedom. American reporter Joe Bradley recognizes her and secretly plans to sell her story.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A princess chooses duty over romance, and a reporter chooses honor over a scoop. Audrey Hepburn's first starring role, and a bittersweet, clean ending.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Ann runs away from her duties and Joe lies to her to get his story; both choose rightly in the end (she returns to her duty, he gives up the story), which is a natural talk. Ann is given a sedative and acts tipsy, and there's champagne, smoking, and a brawl on a barge.
