Return of the Jedi1983Return of the Jedi
1983
Luke, now a Jedi, leads a rescue of Han from the gangster Jabba the Hutt, while the Rebel Alliance prepares to strike a new Death Star. On the forest moon of Endor and before the Emperor himself, Luke faces his father one last time, convinced there is still good in him.
For children old enough to talk it through: sustained intensity, or language or sexual content that Common Sense Media rates 7–9.
Why it’s here
A son refuses to believe his father is beyond saving and refuses to strike him down in anger. The final act is a picture of repentance and mercy.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Leia is held prisoner by Jabba in a skimpy outfit, the Emperor tortures Luke with lightning, and there's a monster in Jabba's pit and deaths in the Ewok battle. Vader repents and saves his son, which is a powerful opening to talk about redemption.

Content advisory
Common Sense Media 8+: lightsaber and space battles, a severed hand, prolonged electrocution, no profanity; hookahs in Jabba's palace; Leia in a skimpy bikini.
