Oliver!1968Oliver!
1968
Orphan Oliver Twist dares to ask for more gruel, is sold to an undertaker, and runs away to London. There the Artful Dodger brings him into Fagin's gang of boy pickpockets.
For children old enough to talk it through: sustained intensity, or language or sexual content that Common Sense Media rates 7–9.
Why it’s here
Dickens as a musical: Nancy's sacrificial love and an innocent boy kept from corruption.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Fagin's thieving is played as merry fun in "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two," so parents will want to point out that it's wrong, and the boys smoke and are given gin. Bill Sikes beats Nancy to death (blows not shown, screams heard) and is shot, which is intense for younger children.
