Why it’s here

A daughter risks her life to spare her father and brings honor to her family through courage and resourcefulness. It ends with her coming home, where her father's embrace means more than the emperor's gifts.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Mulan deceives her family and the army by disguising herself as a man; she does it to save her father, but she's exposed and faces the consequences, so it's a chance to talk about honoring parents and honesty. The burned village and the avalanche battle are intense for little ones.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Mulan take her father's place? Was it right?
  2. What did Mulan's father say when she came home, and why did it matter so much?
  3. Who was the bravest person in the story?
  4. Was Mushu a help or a hindrance?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 5+: war scenes, a burned village (aftermath), a tense sword fight; mild flirting.
