Monsters University

2013

Long before they were partners, Mike Wazowski was a bookish freshman determined to become a scarer, and Sulley was a lazy natural from a famous family. Thrown out of the scaring program, the two rivals join a band of misfits to compete in the Scare Games.

Why it’s here

Unusually honest for a family film: hard work doesn't guarantee your dream, cheating has consequences, and two proud students find their places through humility and friendship.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Light college-party scenes with red cups and mild insults. Mike and Sully cheat in the Scare Games, and when it comes out they're expelled, which is a clear consequence worth talking about.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Mike worked harder than anyone. Why wasn't that enough?
  2. What did you think of Sulley's choice to cheat? What happened because of it?
  3. Was it right for the dean to expel them?
  4. Which Oozma Kappa member was your favorite?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 5+: monster scares; mild college partying; mild insults.
