Meet the Robinsons

2007

Lewis is a twelve-year-old orphan and inventor whose gadgets always seem to explode. While he's trying to build a machine to recover his memory of the mother who gave him up, a boy from the future whisks him away to meet the remarkable Robinson family, just as a villain in a bowler hat makes his move.

The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.

Why it’s here

An orphan who longs for a family learns from failure to "keep moving forward." Its villain is a bitter boy who couldn't let go of a grudge, a vivid picture of why forgiveness matters.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Lewis is an orphan searching for his birth mother, and a dark future ruled by a robotic hat and a T-rex chase may scare little ones. The villain's bitter resentment is shown as the root of his ruin, which is worth talking about.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Lewis want so badly to find his mother?
  2. What happened to Goob, and why did he become the Bowler Hat Guy?
  3. What did the Robinsons do when someone failed? Did that surprise you?
  4. If you could invent anything, what would it be?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 7+: a menacing robotic hat and a T-rex chase; mild taunts.
