Why it’s here

Few films love ordinary family life so warmly. A father finally puts his household's roots above his own advancement, and the seasons of one American home become the whole drama.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

The Halloween sequence (a bonfire, a dare at a neighbor's door, and Tootie's dangerous trolley prank) can frighten young children. Tootie falsely blames John for her injury, and Esther attacks him before the truth comes out and she apologizes, which is a natural talk about lying and jumping to conclusions.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Should Mr. Smith have moved the family to New York? Why or why not?
  2. Why do you think Tootie knocked down her snowmen?
  3. Which season in the film would you most like to live in?
  4. Was the music beautiful? Which song stayed with you?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 6+: no violence, language, or drinking concerns; a spooky Halloween night.
