Mary Poppins1964Mary Poppins
1964
In 1910 London, the Banks children have driven off nanny after nanny. Then Mary Poppins floats down on the east wind with her friend Bert, and their adventures begin to change the family, especially Mr. Banks.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A magical nanny restores a busy father to his children. "Feed the Birds" and a kite at the end make it a parable of what fathers are for.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
The children misbehave and run away, and Mr. Banks is cold and strict at first; the film shows him repent and fly a kite with them, which is a good talk about family. Admiral Boom's cannon, a mild "Red Indians" reference, and sherry are unaddressed.
