Why it’s here

A family too poor to keep its dog, a father who won't let his son lie or steal, and a dog's faithfulness. One of the great animal stories, with a very young Elizabeth Taylor.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Lassie is shot at, attacked by dogs, and exhausted, and a kind peddler's dog is killed by thieves, which is intense for young animal lovers but resolves well. Joe's father insists the family keep its word about the sale, which is a natural talk about honesty when it costs.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Joe's family have to sell Lassie?
  2. What did Joe's father teach him about honesty?
  3. Which person helped Lassie most on her journey?
  4. How did you feel when Lassie came home?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 8+: Lassie is shot at and attacked by dogs; bloody paws; a peddler's dog is killed; pipe smoking.
