1957
Johnny is the most gifted apprentice in a Boston silversmith's shop, and he knows it, until an accident maims his hand and his pride. Adrift, he finds a new calling among the Sons of Liberty as the colonies move toward revolution.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
A proud boy is humbled and finds his purpose in the cause of ordered liberty. Based on Esther Forbes's Newbery-winning novel, it shows the founding with gratitude and pairs naturally with the living book.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
Revolutionary War skirmishes show gunfire and men killed (no gore), and Johnny's hand is maimed by molten silver (not shown graphically), which may be intense for little ones. His arrogance is shown as a fault that the injury humbles, so it's a good chance to talk about pride and finding a new calling.
