Why it’s here

A lighter frontier adventure: a boastful rivalry turns into friendship and a joint stand against outlaws, with Davy dealing fairly with the Chickasaw to keep the peace.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Long fights with guns, knives, and tomahawks may be intense for little ones. The outlaws disguise themselves as "Injuns" and dated terms like "redskin" are used, and Mike Fink's boasting and drinking are played for laughs.

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. What did you think of Mike Fink at first? Did that change?
  2. Why did the river pirates dress up as Indians?
  3. How did Davy keep the peace?
  4. Who really won the race?

Content advisory

Common Sense Media 7+: long but not graphic fights with guns, knives, and tomahawks; outdated terms like "Injun" and "redskin"; drinking to excess.
