Why it’s here

Based on a true story: a man who was once an orphan himself gives his life to fathering boys, teaming up with a gruff captain to save their home. It shows fatherlessness as a wound and fathering as a calling.

Context notes

For parents, before you press play.

Gang shootings in the background, boys' stories of abuse, and an offer to run drugs, which is refused and shown as the right choice. Men drink to excess and there's mild profanity ("piss," "hell").

Discussion questions

When the credits end, go around the room. Each person gives the film a score out of ten and says why.

  1. Why did Omar care so much about the boys?
  2. What did Wade and Omar learn from each other?
  3. What did you think of Moco? Did he change?
  4. Which moment on the water stuck with you most?
