Beauty and the Beast1991Beauty and the Beast
1991
When her father is imprisoned in an enchanted castle, Belle offers herself in his place to its fearsome master, a prince cursed for his selfishness. As a strange friendship grows between them, the village braggart Gaston plots to claim Belle for himself.
The default: films the whole family can watch together; any scary or intense moments for the littlest viewers are flagged in the Context Notes.
Why it’s here
Belle trades her freedom for her father's, and a proud, selfish prince is changed through humility and love. It sets true love against Gaston's vanity and has some of Disney's finest music.
Context notes
For parents, before you press play.
A wolf attack, the Beast's angry outbursts, and the mob storming the castle can frighten little ones. Gaston's vanity and Lumiere's flirting are played for laughs, while the Beast's temper is shown as wrong and he learns gentleness.
